Giving precedence to the elders is not general

Giving precedence to the elders is not general

Ibn Battāl Rahimahullah said in the explanation of Saheeh Al-Bukhārī vol.9 pg. 317 and 318 in the Maktaba alrushd print

Honouring the elders and putting them first in speaking and in all affairs is from the manners and excellent morals of Islām, and Abdur-Razzaq mentioned in the Hadeeth (from glorifying Allāh's loftiness is respecting those who have reached old age in Islām) and with this meaning the Prophet ﷺ said:(The elder the elder) So he ordered  to let the elder be the first one too speak, so this is a Sunnah, but the Hadeeth of Ibn 'Umar proves that the meaning of this is not general, in fact it is incumbent that the elder starts speaking in that which the young and old are equal in knowledge, but if the youth knew that which the elder was ignorant of, then it is incumbent for the one who has knowledge to mention it and put it forth, even if he was young, and that is not considered bad manners or being short with the right of the elder by proceeding him, because when the Prophet ﷺ asked his companions about the tree which was resembled to the Muslim and from those companions was Ibn 'Umar and others who were younger than him in age, he did not restrict the answer to the elders specifically, but in fact he asked all of them, for all to answer with that which he knows, and the statement of 'Umar to his son points to this:(Had you said it, it would have been more dearer to me than such and such thing [fortune].) Because 'Umar does not like that which opposes the manners of Islām and it's Sunnahs, and He رضي الله عنه used to ask Ibn 'Abbās رضي الله عنهما, who was a youth around his elders and that was considered from the merits of Ibn 'Abbās رضي الله عنهما.

And The Hadeeth of Ibn 'Umarرضي الله عنهما was related by the Al-Bukhārī and Muslim in their Saheeh's: Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما narrated: Allāh's Messenger ﷺ said, "Inform me of a tree which resembles a Muslim, giving it's fruits at every season by the permission of its lord (Allāh), and the leaves of which do not fall." I thought of the date palm tree, but I disliked to speak because Abū Bakr and 'Umar were present there. When nobody spoke, the Prophet said, "It is the date palm tree." When I came out with my father, I said," O father! It came to my mind that it was the date palm tree." He said, "What prevented you from saying it? Had you said it, it would have been dearer to me than such and such a thing (fortune)." I said, "Nothing prevented me but the fact that neither you nor Abū Bakr spoke, so I disliked to speak (in your presence)."
